Doja Cat interview with Clara Amfo
October 30, 2023
It is with no hesitation that this interview does what it is intended to do. It clearly illustrates that Doja Cat, as an artist, shines within her field as a producer and singer/songwriter. However, is Clara Amfo's approach to the content significant in any way to the audience and platform? Throughout this blog I will seek to answer this question.
One of the main ways one can analyse the depth of report is to check if it has the vital elements such as the five Ws and the H formula. The ‘Who’ here is evident, and its Doja Cat. The main basis of this report being ‘Scarlet’, her 2023 studio album, makes her the subject of ‘who is it about?’. Doja Cat is the creator of the album, and the interview is conducted to explore the means of her creation. Although other people have been involved in the making of the album, such as producers, it started and ended with her as the main developer of the piece. Giving her this platform to elaborate on her thought process and final product gives her proper identification, because the story is coming directly from the source. The second W is ‘What happened?’. In this report the
main story is the release of an album that sold 72,000 units and peaked at
number four on the Billboard 200 list. Here Doja Cat is invited to elaborate on
this major found success to give the audience of her album and of BBC radio 1
more information on what lead to its creation. If Doja Cat and ‘Scarlet’ weren’t
so heavily followed by individuals on social media over the past years, it
would not be of any relevance to a big audience like that of BBC radio 1. The radios
platform itself has 8.19 million subscribers.
Since the focus here is the album itself the next two
Ws, ‘When did it take place?' and ‘Where did it take place?’, should be answered
as follows. The making of ‘Scarlet’ took place over the course of two years
following the cancellation of her tour in 2022. In the interview this timeline
is touched up to help Doja Cat expand on how it was made. It also touches upon
the advertisement of the album which started in mid-august 2023 and also the releases
aftermath from September 21st till present day. The development of ‘Scarlet’
mainly took place in her home and record studio, in Malibu, California.
During the marketing of the album Doja Cat seemed to use elements of unconventional nature. At the time it seemed like Doja was trying everything to cancel herself, through statements such as ‘Planet Her and Hot Pink were cash-grabs’ and ‘I don’t know y’all’ on X, basically saying that she did not love her fans. The making of this album symbolised a rebirth for Doja. This answers our fifth W, ‘Why did it happen?’. The album and its events happened because Doja wanted something different for herself, she seemed to be done with making music that was only intended to bring money in for her record label. By making this album she made what only she wanted to make, without the influence of her fans and her label. The ‘How did it happen?’ is simple. Doja is undeniably talented in her field, if she wanted to change her persona, she had every asset to do so, all she had to do was gather her team and hit the record studio.
The main aim of the report is to create praise and
celebration for Doja Cat. It is intended to promote ‘Scarlet’ and its tour.
Clara Amfo does a very good job of eliciting conversations with Doja Cat to
create will from the audience to discover the album. The platform gives Doja
the opportunity to reach a wider audience as the outreach is not only for her
fans.
In conclusion, this interview successfully achieves
its intended purpose by providing a spotlight on Doja Cat as both a talented
artist and the creative force behind her 2023 studio album, 'Scarlet.' Clara
Amfo's approach to the content proves significant, not just for Doja Cat's
existing fan base but also for a broader audience on the BBC Radio 1 platform.
